Stussy X YO! MTV Raps have just aired the first of a two part documentary titled ‘The Importance of Yo! MTV Raps’. Def Jam’s Bill Adler explaines the history and influence of Hip Hop and the pioneering medium responsible for introducing hip-hop to the masses.
We were restricted to 5 channels in the UK up until 1991. Our idea of cool was ‘Jim’ll fix it’ (before we found out he was waaay to friendly with the kids) and Gordon the Gopher. America drip fed us shows like Night Rider, the A-Team, Blue Thunder and I wanted more of that.
A trip to the USA and turning on the hotel TV was pure heaven in the late 80’s, channels and shows up to your eyeballs. I remember switching to MTV for the first time and being blown away by the shear coolness. Yo! MTV Raps was on with Dr Dre, Fab 5 Freddy and Ed Lover showing videos of my favorite tunes. I had the tapes on my Walkman but had never seen the videos to the likes of De La Soul before… I was hooked! Saying I was excited when cable final came to the UK and I could get my Yo! MTV Raps fix is an understatment. Ok nostalgia justified, take a look for yourself.
