Redbull Formula 1 team have released ‘The art of the pitstop’, a record breaking wheel change of 2.050 seconds shot with high-speed cameras. In just a few seconds a huge number of actions are carried out by a Formula 1 pit crew. Despite this, I am sure you have grumbled at the television when your team pits and all does not go to plan. The pit crew take a few extra seconds to change wheels and it feels like an agonising eternity. Races are frequently won and lost because of the pit stops and pit crews.
Anyone can tighten a wheel nut. But now imagine tightening the wheel nut of someone’s car that will soon be travelling in excess of 180mph. The added pressure knowing the drivers life is in your hands changes everything. The pit lane is a dangerous place, the crew do not wear all that safety equipment for nothing. Think of this years German Grand Prix when Camera Man, Paul Allen, was hit by Mark Webbers loose wheel. This clip highlights the pure skill and co-ordination required to get the job done.
